All TV should be like The Tudors

hampton-courtIn its short but resplendent history, American television has presented some shows that truly challenge the intellect. But once in a very rare while they create one that is simply a lustrous gem. Foremost among those currently in vogue has to be Showtime’s ‘The Tudors.’

This sumptuous portrayal of 16th century England is, without doubt, among the most perfect examples of the  televisual arts; Excellent sets, glorious lighting, opulent wardrobe and flawless portrayals, drawn from a cast whose faultless selection could boggle the mind.

This is what TV could be, if only those who make it could be bothered to care.

This much-awaited third season rejoins the story in 1536 as Henry, fresh from his malfeasant disposal of the wronged Anne Boleyn, courts and marries her successor, Jane Seymour, with whom he fulfilled his passionate quest for a son, Edward VI.

As a taster of what to expect, Metromix has a luxuriant gallery of some of the scenes.  The wonderful folk at the LA Times will even let you watch part one online, in case you can’t wait.

This is quite simply what TV was made for. The show returns to enchant us on April 5th. Don’t miss your chance to indulge.
