Brian Williams to get Cronkite Award

paul-galvin-playhouse-at-asuNBC’s ‘Nightly News’ anchor, and Jay Leno’s most finely-honed straight-man, Brian Williams, has been rightly selected to receive this year’s Walter Cronkite Award.

Mr Williams, who has often said he regarded Walter Cronkite as a childhood idol, will receive the award during a luncheon at Arizona State University’s ‘Walter Cronkite School of Journalism’ in Phoenix on November 18th, according to ASU’s own report.

Having taken over the reins from Tom Brokaw as Anchor in 2002, Mr. Williams, already a recipient of four Edward R. Murrow awards and five Emmy’s, has proven himself a polished professional and a likable guy. But with increasing frequency, almost every story on each evening’s show is couched in the form of a ‘tease.’

Is this really the way to tell a nation what’s happening – Infantile games of “I know and you don’t”?

Some would say it’s done to gain ratings and stop people swapping channels during the show. That’s moronic. You don’t keep viewers by treating them like 3-year olds, you keep them by telling them the facts and what’s going on. Let your competitors play these infantile games — it will only drive more viewers to you. Deliver the news, and spare us the insult – That’s what Walter would do.

Am I alone in this allergy, or does anyone here actually enjoy such behavior?
