With true creativity now rarer than gold, the one thing Hollywood gets excited about is truckloads of money, and with Wolverine bagging $150+ million in less than a week it was a matter of time until they came back for more.
It therefore comes as no shock to learn that 20th Century Fox is already prepping the script for ‘Deadpool,” as a spin-off for the Wolverine character played by Ryan Reynolds in the Hugh Jackman cash-cow.
Deadpool, for those who have so far avoided the X-Men bug, is a hugely popular member of Marvel’s comic-book family, and the 33-year old Canadian was almost pre-destined to take on the role – In one Marvel issue, Deadpool is described as cross between “a Shar Pei and Ryan Reynolds.” So getting cast was less than a chore.
In this, his first solo feature, Ryan’s character would regain his voice, with the bulk of the plot set to focus on the indestructible mercenary’s famous slapstick behavior. And for those who saw ‘Wolverine’ and thought Deadpool was toast, go see it again and watch after the credits – it’s a great bit of shtick. While he dropped a few pounds, weight loss pills weren’t involved.
Apart from his forthcoming encore as Deadpool, Ryan’s got quite a schedule to fill – There is also a sequel for Wolverine in the works, and this time the gang all take over Japan. He can also be seen in Sandra Bullock’s new film, ‘The Proposal,’ in which she must marry or face deportation. And guess who becomes her unwitting groom? It bows June 19, and if you like Ryan you might need to go.
The studio is still picking writers for both Marvel projects, so no dates have been set for when filming might start. Once they decide, I’ll keep you advised.
