‘Improv Everywhere’ lights up New York

This has to be among the most uplifting, unique and original enactments of combined creativity in the history of New York at least.

On July 26th, 3,500 total strangers gathered in Nelson Rockefeller Park at dusk and created a colorful tableau of pure, harmless fun and magic with just some music players, cameras, glow sticks and flashlights.

As you might guess the whole event was the brainchild of the creative iconoclasts at ‘Improv Everywhere.‘ If those guys could just move to Hollywood we might finally see an original movie instead of endless reboots and remakes.

Watch the video. If you’re unmoved by the collective joy so obvious among this flawless canopy of spirited volunteers you either run a Hollywood studio or you might need to check for a pulse…

Studio Center, a rare glimpse of subtle success

The entertainment world is rather liberally stocked with people who will eagerly tell you they’re unfeasibly talented, so it makes a very welcome change to find a group by whom such claims have been viably earned. One of these rare cases is Studio Center.

Formed in 1966 the firm specializes in what, thanks to the unbounded triumph of movies by firms like Pixar is fast becoming a major sector of today’s creative landscape – voice actors.

And that’s no small feat.

Almost any creative production from movie trailers to a full-scale video production can rise or fall on the merits of those whose talents are heard but not seen. If you have an outline for such a project yourself it’s clear you’d be following a solid tradition if you gave Studio Center a call…

Anna Massey takes final curtain call at 73

Anna Massey, one of the most gifted, captivating and widely loved actresses of her generation has died in London. She was 73.

This is sad news for the acting world and a great loss for her legions of fans. Every role was crafted by an understated artistry that made her both convincing and a pure joy to watch in whatever she did.

In a 53-year career that began at just 17-years old and covered everything from lonely spinsters to Baroness Thatcher, Anna won a BAFTA and many other awards, plus a CBE that proves her talent was also admired by those at the Palace.

But the seemingly effortless aplomb she displayed on the screen was also an act, so it seems; And a fine one;

“I find acting incredibly difficult – it demands much more of my time than it does for some people,” she once told reporters. “I’m not instinctive. It takes enormous discipline and bravery to get me there.”

This wonderful lady and consummate actress will be deeply missed by anyone who ever saw her work, and that loss is best expressed by her agent;

“She will be remembered as a loving wife and mother, a cherished grandmother, a generous colleague and, always, a consummate professional,” the told the BBC. ”She will be greatly missed.”

Classic character actor, Kenneth Mars dies of cancer at 75

[The Limey] – Kenneth Mars, the popular character actor whose 40+ year career gave us the unstable playwright with a fondness for Hitler in ‘The Producers,’ and Otto Mannkusser from ‘Malcom in the Middle’ has died of cancer at his home in the San Fernando Valley. He was 75.

Born in Chicago on April 14, 1934, Kenneth got his break in the 1962 NBC comedy ‘Car 54, Where Are You?’ From there his credits read like a catalog of classic TV, from ‘Gunsmoke’ and ‘Get Smart’ to ‘Star Trek: DS-9.’

The film world soon took notice and in 1968 Mel Brooks cast Kenneth as ‘Franz Liebkind.’ the clinically unstable author of a groveling homage to Hitler, dressed up as a musical. Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder appear as two scheming producers who want to put it on Broadway in a devious – and hopelessly doomed – plot to get rich. The result won an Oscar.

Another memorable role came in 1974 with ‘Young Frankenstein.’ Again with Mel Brooks. This time Kenneth was Inspector Kemp, an officious member of the local PD who was hunting Gene Wilder’s monster. There was a wooden arm with a will of its own, a German accent so thick even those who shared it couldn’t make out a word, and an eye patch and a monocle…On the same eye.

You may also remember Ken as Hugo Simon, the Croatian musicologist whose pretentious thesis gets soundly debunked by Barbra Streisand in Peter Bogdanovich’s 1972 evergreen comedy ‘What’s Up Doc.’

His vocal skills also brought lots of cartoon work, including ‘The Little Mermaid,’ ‘The Jetsons’ and ‘The Land Before Time.’ There were also several theater parts, resulting in an enviable total of 198 separate roles.

In a statement issued yesterday, Kenneth’s family say he passed away quietly on Saturday at his home in Grenada Hills after a long fight with pancreatic cancer. He’s survived by two daughters and six grandchildren. A private funeral is planned for later this month.

Donations in remembrance can be made to the ‘Smile Train’ charity in Washington D.C.

Keith Olbermann exits MSNBC…or was he pushed?

[The Limey] – MSNBC has dropped Keith Olbermann. His last show was tonight. Lawrence O’Donnell gets his slot, starting Monday.

This is pure spite by the network for his win in November. It is also both deeply unfair and unprovoked.

I say this was not resignation it was assisted suicide; enabled by a spineless and ungrateful assemblage of unimaginative, infertile drones eager to please and placate their new owners.

Comcast got clearance to absorb the network on Thursday and in 24-hours one of its most popular hosts is no more.

Coincidence? You be the judge.

This is a breaking story and details will undoubtedly emerge as the hours progress. I’ll update tomorrow when more becomes known. Meantime, let’s hear your views…

Keith Olbermann exits MSNBC…or was he pushed?

Conan O’Brien picks a feathery friend on Twitter

[TheLimey] – The curious, virtual peacock that is Twitter has gained a great deal of press since many so-called celebrities jumped aboard to stroke their own egos and compound their fame. But Conan O’Brien is the one viable celeb who has found a good use.

Since he began tweeting on February 24 the 46-year old host has garnered 555,441 followers – and counting. But he’s followed no-one – Until now.

“I’ve decided to follow someone at random,” he tweeted yesterday. ”She likes peanut butter and gummy dinosaurs. Sarah Killen, your life is about to change,” read Conan’s newest tweet – only his tenth in two weeks.

And he was right – In 24-hours the formerly anonymous Michigan resident saw her account‘s followers rise from 3 to 11,730 – all due to Conan.

But unlike most of the celebrities Coco could have followed, were he that dumb, Sarah is using the overnight fame to help other people – She’s planning to walk 60-miles in 3-days to raise funds for the Susan G. Komen Foundation and asked her new fans to donate to the cause.

And true to the spirit of Conan’s disciples, they did – RBR says she’s raised over $1,200 in one day.

Herself a long-time fan of Coco, Sarah’s also planning a wedding in September, and would love her feathery friend to drop by;

“We were only going to invite, like, twenty people. So if he came it could be as big as he wanted,” she told MTV. “He could bring anyone he wanted. He could have more people there than I do.”

She was also asked by the scribes if she thought Coco should start a new show?

“He definitely needs to. Definitely.” she enthused. “He has no idea what he did for me. Just the one day, this is the most awesome day ever!”

Now that’s a charming story, don’t you think? Whatever your views on Conan’s exit from NBC, the man has real class. Most people would have given withering interviews to anyone who would listen [and pay,] bemoaning their treatment, threatening lawsuits and demanding redress.

But not Coco – He picks a random tweeter and changes her life, and she in turn is using that fame to benefit others. And that’s a rare and very welcome event.

As for Conan’s own future path, Ticketmaster’s computers are now buckling under the influx of orders for his newly-announced live show in Phoenix on April 30th, with a nationwide tour after that. So the man is by no means out of the game.

And if he could choose a few more people like Sarah, the result could truly show NBC for the clueless, brainless, ratings-bound droids all his fans now know they are…

Branson, Missouri could steal Nashville’s crown

This country is famous for three major places in terms of performance – Broadway, Nashville, and, of course, Hollywood. But recently a fourth major venue has emerged on the scene – Branson, Missouri.

In 1959, two brothers started shows to entertain tourists who had come to the Ozarks to enjoy the glorious scenery and three pristine lakes. The word quickly spread, and this town of just 6,900 people now plays host to over 8-million visitors a year, and has now grown from those few humble shows to stand second only to Nashville itself.

Today, forty different theatres present over 100 live shows a year – almost all of them sold-out weeks in advance. Even Broadway can’t claim such success. Branson vacations can change people’s lives. If your days are too stressful maybe you should book one?

The impact of such shows as ‘Extreme Makeover’, ‘Top Chef’ and others has made large swathes of people take a new look at their homes. Suddenly, houses all over this glorious nation are sporting such tasteful décor as bucara rugs, suave copper sinks and a blossoming list of upscale augmentation.

But the sudden emergence of so much new money has made some people eager to share it, without taking the trouble to care what they sell. If you’re among those erudite few who love home decoration, research your sellers – there be sharks in this pond.

Whoever the genius was who decided to market death insurance as life insurance should get an award. It’s a hard pill to swallow, dealing with something you won’t live to use. But if you have, or plan to sometime acquire a family you need to ensure they’ll be protected in case you’re not there.
