A hundred billion clues but no answer

Since the days of Galileo man has gazed into the heavens, vainly endeavoring to find the secret of life or at least get a clue why we’re here. The great man himself used a telescope to assist in his search but there’s no firm proof he ever found that elusive secret.

Today, telescopes are exponentially stronger and instruments like the Hubble have uncovered clues to the origins of the universe that will keep scientists enthralled for ten years, if not longer.

If you ever ponder the great questions of human life you could take a lesson from the brains at NASA. Modern equipment like refractor telescopes can bring the most distant stars so comparatively close you’ll feel you could touch them. All you need is a clear night and the desire to explore.

If you feel suitably inspired the heavens await you – Find a quiet spot, pack a thermos of coffee, look up and enjoy…

Good news for concert fans

Despite the wonders of Blu Ray and Imax there’s still nothing to beat the experience of a live concert. Watching your idol on the screen is one thing but to see them live on stage is usually an experience few fans can forget.

Of course, the big snag is the cost – Tickets for some star’s live shows are well over $100 and that’s forcing a lot of fans to give up the live experience and settle for CD’s and TV spots.

Most of you will have never known a time when life didn’t work via buttons. Since the [mostly] welcome arrival of computer technology almost 30-years ago, the working day has become a sweat-less sequence of pushing some keys, and letting machines do the work. This was not always the case.

In the mid-50′s and 60′s, thousands of construction workers were unknowingly exposed to almost lethal levels of asbestos and other toxic materials. Decades later, the results are sadly too easy to see; Mesothelioma has killed thousands of people, and continues to blight – and prematurely end – people’s lives to this day.

If you have a family member who was involved in construction some years ago, for your sake and theirs, get them checked out by a Doctor. Soon.

The visible signs of success are many, and vary according to who might be making the choice; Some would buy an expensive home, others choose jewelry or designer clothes, but most would agree the most overt and envy-inducing proof of success is a beautiful car. In a word, a Ferrari. But luxurious transport of such a high caliber does have its drawbacks; The cars themselves are superb, but Ferrari parts are hard to source and expensive to need.

Of all the problems this life can present there are few we could actively want, but this one is quite surely among them. Let’s hope this new year brings us all such a burden, so we may all live the life we deserve.

On February 1st this glorious country will once more grind to a halt as those so blessed as to call it their home take a pause from their labors, eager to offer their annual homage to an activity that is the causative focus of more devotion, worship and unbridled reverence than any religion could hope to inspire. Superbowl.

The final roll-call for this year’s encounter is still undecided, but with a cast to be chosen from the Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens, Arizona Cardinals or the Philadelphia Eagles, and battle due to share the same venue, Tampa, as the memorable Bowls of 35, 39 and 41, the implicit potential of the coming engagement must be making every true fan almost drool with impatience.

As a foreigner, the focus, respect and unswerving devotion this resplendent event inspires among its disciples is as clearly boundless as it is frankly amazing. Debate and discourse between hard-core fans of the remaining teams is already feverish, and destined to grow in these seventeen days. This year, many will watch the encounter on a new Hi-Def TV. But for some, even that’s not enough. They use sites like Comcast to find current team news, videos and semi-final scores to help select the best football picks.

But all this devotion will find resolution; Two weeks on Sunday, the streets will empty, the whistle will blow and the pains of waiting will finally end. If you’re married, reserve the TV set now or she’ll rent “Mamma Mia,”…just to torment you. The game itself should, as always, be loud and impressive, but frankly I’d be happy just to grasp what it means…
